I've listened to "Detours" numerous times, and I own all of Sheryl Crow's previous albums with my favorites being "Tuesday Night Music Club" and "Sheryl Crow". Beginning with "The Globe Sessions", I have felt that each Crow album thereafter has been diminished returns with a slight upswing on "C'mon C'mon", followed by the worst album of her career thus far, the dismal "Wildflower".
That said, I found "Detours" to be a step in the right direction, and her best work since "Sheryl Crow". Now, I see that there are many Crow-bashers here who quibble over Sheryl going political, or that her lyrics aren't very good, or that Bill Bottrell's songs are the worst. Whatever.
There are 14 songs on "Detours" and I typically find that excessive, but not here. Sheryl and Bill make the 14 songs hold together rather well. The topics are timely with war, love, gasoline, human conditions and her adoptive son. I particularly found "God Bless This Mess", "Gasoline" and "Motivation" all to be extremely well written whilst "Love Is Free", "Peace Be Upon Us", "Out Of Our Heads" being well arranged and constructed and more visceral.
